Monk was never much more than a perfectly pleasant show, but, in the end, that was probably enough for its millions of fans. When it first came on the air in 2002, as Alan Sepinwall has pointed out , the series was basically doing something the networks had given up on. As the networks rushed to meet cable halfway in terms of edgy material, ABC passed on Monk , simply because it didn't seem to fit any network model at the time, and it slipped to USA, which took a substantial chance on the bet that people still wanted to watch ...

'Glee': Idina Menzel 'would love' to play Rachel's mom

Many " Glee " fans have whispered and speculated about Rachel Berry's family for months. But we still have never met Rachel's parents -- her gay dads or her biological mom -- but what if when we do meet mommy, she's played by Broadway babe, Idina Menzel ? Seems Menzel, best known for her role as Elphaba in "Wicked," is game. Menzel's husband, "Private Practice" star Taye Diggs , told Fancast.com this week that he and his wife are admirers of both "Glee" and Lea Michele , who plays the young Ms. Berry. He said he knows Idina "would love " to do the show. The couple is actually friendly with Lea, who starred on Broadway in "Spring Awakening" during her pre-"Glee" days. 'Monk' is gone, but he left a legacy

"Monk" works his last case Friday night, ending an eight-season run that put Tony Shalhoub 's obsessive-compulsive detective into the pantheon of quirky TV gumshoes. "Monk" was never an especially challenging show, which was one of its charms. You knew going into an episode that Shalhoub's character would likely be grossed out by some unpleasant aspect of a crime scene, that his keenly honed observational powers would help him see things no one else could and that by the end of the hour, those things would come together to catch the perpetrator. What has kept the show entertaining for so long is its strong investment in character. Creator Andy Breckman and the show's writers have kept an admirably light hand on things over the years -- further adding to the show's comfort-food vibe -- but they've also given supporting actors Traylor Howard, Ted Levine and Jason Gray-Stanford enough material to push their characters beyond the standard-issue bosses and sidekicks. The petite Emmy-award winner is starring in her first Lifetime television movie, "12 Men of Christmas" Saturday, (Dec. 5).
