TV ratings: CBS, 'Ghost Whisperer' lead a quiet Friday

Fast National ratings for Friday, Nov. 27, 2009 The broadcast networks were mostly in rerun and movie mode on the day after Thanksgiving, but as usual CBS finished the night on top. CBS averaged 5.3 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/6 share in households in primetime. FOX (4.8 million, 2.6/5) finished second. ABC's 4.4 million viewers and 2.9/5 were good enough for third, topping NBC's 3.7 million and 2.4/4. The CW (1.2 million, 0.8/1) was in the back of the pack. FOX led the adults 18-49 demographic, albeit with just a modest 1.4 rating. CBS took second with a 1.2, and ABC and NBC tie for third at 1.1. The CW came in at 0.5. Fast National ratings for Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009 Americans were settling into a collective food coma on Thanksgiving night, so consequently TV viewing was pretty light. CBS and a "Survivor: Samoa" clip show led the way. CBS drew 9.3 million viewers and a 5.4 rating/11 share on the night, beating second-place FOX (6.6 million, 3.4/7) by a comfortable margin. ABC (5.4 million, 2.9/5) came in third. NBC finished fourth with 4.3 million viewers and a 2.6/5, and The CW (2.35 million, 1.4/3) trailed. The adults 18-49 ratings played out the same way, with CBS' 2.4 snagging the top spot. FOX took second in the demographic at 2.0. ABC, 1.6, was third, followed by NBC, 1.3, and The CW, 0.9. When it comes to "American Idol" Adam Lambert 's same-sex kiss at the American Music Awards, the hosts of "The View" are frighteningly prescient. The women of "The View" wondered why the more scandalous parts of Lambert's act were censored while video of a kiss between Madonna and Britney Spears at the 2003 Video Music Awards has been widely circulated on network television. No, they weren't talking about CBS' blurring of the kiss on "The Early Show" during a segment on Lambert. In that case, CBS defended showing an unblurred clip of Madonna kissing Britney Spears by saying that video had been "widely disseminated." (As opposed to, we suppose, the millions of people talking about Lambert's performance.) No, they meant the ABC West Coast feed of the American Music Awards, during which parts of Lambert's performance were censored. When it comes to same-sex kisses, it looks like CBS is on board... as long as both parties are women. During an "Early Show" segment on "American Idol" Adam Lambert's same-sex kiss during the American Music Awards, CBS blurred a picture of the kiss. It then showed un-blurred pictures of Madonna kissing Britney Spears . Ironically, Lambert had agreed to appear on "The Early Show" after ABC's "Good Morning America" cancelled a planned performance by Lambert in the wake of the controversy. "We gave this some real thought," a CBS representative explained to Extra . "The Madonna image is very familiar and has appeared countless times including many times on morning television. The Adam Lambert image is a subject of great current controversy, has not been nearly as widely disseminated, and for all we know, may still lead to legal consequences." Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 NBC's " The Biggest Loser : Where Are They Now?" was early Wednesday's biggest winner, though it was quickly steamrolled by the CBS procedural juggernaut in the later hours. "Criminal Minds" took home the night's demo trophy, and "CSI: NY" ended the evening with a bang for the Eye. Those shows pulled out a significant CBS win with 11 million viewers and a 6.7 rating/12 share in households. NBC came in a distant second with 6.8 million and a 4.1/7, followed by FOX (5.4 million, 3.3/6), ABC (5.2 million, 3.2/6) and The CW (1.3 million, 0.8/1). Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 Tuesday night was a ratings race with CBS' crime procedurals coming out on top among households, but ABC's three-hour "Dancing With the Stars" finale snatched away the adult demo mirrorball trophy -- barely. Also good for ABC was "V," which maintained its viewership from the previous week after dipping in the past two weeks. CBS took the night with 16.6 million viewers and a 10.3 rating/17 share in households, just ahead of ABC's 15.9 million/9.8/16. 'American Idol's' Adam Lambert to GMA: I'm headed to CBS' 'The Early Show'

CBS does not have the same qualms as ABC -- Adam Lambert has been slotted in at "The Early Show" for Wednesday, Nov. 25. Lambert has confirmed to ETOnline that he will now be appearing on CBS morning program "The Early Show," where he'll perform live and also discuss his controversial performance on the American Music Awards Sunday night. Some people were commenting earlier today that Adam Lambert's AMA shenanigans have killed his career right out of the gate, but it looks like he's doing just fine now. What ABC won't air, CBS is happy to pick up. So now Adam gets to perform anyway AND has gotten all this publicity about his appearance. Seems like he's come out pretty good today. 'How I Met Your Mother': Amanda Peet to play Marshall's co-worker

When Neil Patrick Harris has an idea, the powers-that-be at " How I Met Your Mother " apparently pay attention. Early last week, while on-set for the CBS comedy's 100th episode celebration, NPH told reporters that Amanda Peet would be a person he'd love to see on the show. "I really like her," Harris said. "I think that would be fun." Days later, her deal was done. Peet ("Something's Gotta Give," "The Whole Nine Yards") will guest star on an episode titled "Jenkins" early next year. She will play Marshall ( Jason Segel )'s co-worker. The actress, last seen on television regularly in NBC's defunct "Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip" has most recently been working on the upcoming "Gulliver's Travels" film, in which Segel will star as well . Fast National ratings for Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 The final performances of the season on "Dancing with the Stars" scored the show's biggest audience of the season Monday, leading ABC to a victory and helping the new show "Find My Family" and "Castle" grab decent numbers as well. Also of note: CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" hit an all-time high in viewers and surpassed the audience for its lead-in, "Two and a Half Men," for the first time. ABC pulled 15.9 million viewers and a 10.1 rating/16 share in households for the night. CBS (11.9 million, 7.3/11) finished second, and FOX took third with 9.6 million viewers and a 5.7/8. NBC (5 million, 3.1/5) was a fairly distant fourth, and The CW (1.3 million, 0.9/1) trailed with a night of reruns. CBS captured the demographic crown, drawing a 4.0 rating among adults 18-49. Regis Philbin taking down time for hip surgery

The man who's spent more time on TV than anyone in history will be taking some time off soon. Regis Philbin says he'll take a leave of absence from "Live with Regis and Kelly" to have hip surgery. He's scheduled to go under the knife in New York on Dec. 1, following a week of shows in Las Vegas this week. "I'm going to have my hip replaced. I've been limping around here, and it really is painful," Philbin said on Monday's show. "I'll be back next year." Philbin, 78, holds the Guinness world record for having spent the most hours on camera. As of 2006, the last time the record was updated, he had logged 15,662 hours on screen; three more years of "Live," hosting "Million Dollar Password" on CBS and other guest and talk-show appearances have only added to that. No one will threaten that record in the time he's out; the show says recovery time for the surgery is usually four to six weeks, which could have Philbin back on the air in mid-January. Former "American Idol" star Adam Lambert seemed determined to outdo American Music Awards opener Janet Jackson . Apparently, though, acting like a boob doesn't compare to baring one. Despite a closing performance that featured man-on-man smooching, a simulated sex act and one unplanned tumble, ABC tells USA Today the network only received around 1,500 complaints. CBS, meanwhile, reportedly received more than half a million complaints when her swimsuit area was accidentally revealed during a Super Bowl halftime performance. Lambert has said his same-sex kiss wasn't planned , and that his, uh, exuberant performance was the result of an adrenaline surge. Fast National ratings for Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 NBC's Sunday NFL game pulled in somewhat lower ratings than usual, but they were still big enough to edge CBS and ABC -- which got the biggest audience for the American Music Awards in seven years -- for the night's top spot. NBC averaged 12.94 million viewers and an 8.0 rating/13 share in households on Sunday, edging CBS (12.69 million, 7.8/12) and ABC (12.14 million, 7.3/12) for the lead. (All three networks had live sports for at least a small part of the night, so their numbers may change a little in the final nationals.) CBS was off a touch from the last couple weeks as well, but it still snagged the top spot with 14.35 million viewers and an 8.8 rating/14 share in households. Crime paid for the eye network, with 11.5 million viewers and a 7.3 rating and 12 share in households. Farther down the list, though, ABC's "V" slipped again and Heather Locklear's first "Melrose Place" appearance didn't do much to boost the show. (The CW does note that "Melrose Place" drew its biggest audience since Oct. 6, but not by much. Tuesday's show drew 1.54 million viewers, 158,000 more than last week and just 45,000 more than two weeks ago.) 'Three Rivers,' 'Cold Case' swap spots

CBS will flip its two Sunday dramas this week to see if it can goose the ratings for "Cold Case" and "Three Rivers." The one-week (for now) arrangement will move "Cold Case" to the 9 p.m. ET spot, where it aired last season to much bigger audiences than it's had so far this fall. "Three Rivers," the only new show this season whose future is still up in the air, will air at 10 p.m. (In reality, both shows will likely start a little later than their announced times. CBS has the national NFL doubleheader on Sunday, and the late-afternoon games typically bleed into primetime and bump the regular schedule back.) The changeup comes at the tail end of November sweeps and toward the end of "Three Rivers'" initial order. Seven episodes have aired, and a couple more have finished filming, which means if the network does want more episodes, it has to make a decision soon to avoid a shutdown of the production.
